General Information

For the third year in a row, IPS is excited to return to Olympia, Washington! This beautiful city is home to the state's capital, dozens of small boutique stores, and numerous restaurants and indie coffee shops—lending it a very unique blend of the cosmopolitan and casual! From Puget Sound to quiet parks and busy city streets, workshop participants will have plenty to photograph throughout the week!

Instructors Mandy Novotny and Christina Dickson will join Will Thornton and his wife, Tanya, in providing a wide variety of experience and practical insight during workshop lectures and photo reviews.

Mandy Novotny is our digital guru. Combining her extensive international photography experience with digital processing, re-touching, and design skills, she provides practical tips and tricks for turning your images into works of art.

Christina Dickson is our portrait and fashion pro. She has an eye for posing details, a knack for emotional portraiture, and a passion for reaching the heart of current issues through her photography. Christina excels at communicating the essentials of portraiture without losing the passion for your art.

Will Thornton is our travel and photojournalism expert. With nine years of international photography and photojournalism experience, he brings a passion for combining photographic excellence with a personal interest in your subject matter. Will's desire is to challenge participants to examine the personal character and charisma needed to pursue a life of communication.

Workshop Venue

Classes Classes will be held in a conference room at the Urban Onion, a local restaurant (116 Legion Way Se, Olympia, WA 98501 ). This facility is a few blocks away from the hotel and very centrally located.

Transportation at the Workshop

All of our workshops require a great deal of walking, but we will also be using Olympia's free bus route that runs the length of downtown to allow students and instructors to reach photo assignments and destinations.

Hotel

IPS has negotiated a block of rooms for IPS staff and students at the Clarion Hotel (900 Capitol Way South, Olympia, WA 98501). IPS will be managing the assigning and distribution of hotel rooms. Registration for housing can be done through Will Thornton, as well as any questions or special rooming requests.

Airport Shuttles

Olympia is just over an hour from the main regional airport: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). IPS staff will be making only one or two trips to SEA on the Sunday before each workshop and the Saturday after each workshop, and we will have limited room for student transportation.

We recommend an option several past students have used for past workshops: there are regular van and bus shuttles from the airport to downtown Olympia— arriving in downtown Olympia, with a walk of only a block or two to the hotel! These shuttles add little cost and are quite safe. (For more information visit capair.com

What about the dress code?

In order to maintain professional decorum, workshop attendees are requested to abide by the following guidelines for the duration of the course.

  • Casual, modest-fitting slacks or skirts at least knee-length when sitting.
  • Athletic pants or jeans (sorry, no shorts) for afternoon free time and recreation
  • Clean-cut polo shirts, button-down shirts, or t-shirts free of graphics or writing.
  • Comfortable shoes for extended periods of walking.
  • These are not intended to guide your choice of clothing at home, but rather to promote a consistent standard for those attending our workshops.
